I build full-stack apps, developer tools, and the occasional thing I needed but couldn't find.
My journey with computers started as a kid, when my family got an IBM running Windows. Civilization III came installed on it, and we played flash games, listened to music and watched videos on it too. There were four of us boys and one computer, so on weekend mornings we would split the keyboard three ways: asdw, jkli, and the arrow keys. I was always asdw.
Then one time my mom was joking with a relative about the computer password being one of our nicknames. I tried it, and it was mine. She didn't know we knew, so we would sneak hours on it while they were out, until we got caught and she changed it. We tried everything to get back in. We were just clicking through things and suddenly ended up in safe mode, which unlocked the computer again because that user had no password. That held for a while, until they found safe mode too.
I was always good with computers and figuring out how things worked. I just never had anyone in my life who would advise me to pursue it as a career path.
It restarted with WordPress in 2019. I was building Elementor sites for my office, choosing the themes and building the projects out.
Later, I ran a Shopify store and wanted a button on the 404 page that showed logged-in users a link to their profile, and everyone else the home page. GPT-3.5 and I tried everything we could think of in the custom HTML and CSS panel. The changes would show up, then disappear the moment I refreshed. So I went and found an HTML, CSS, and JavaScript course.
That led me to CS50x on edX in 2023. 12 weeks, 12 lectures, and I thought I'd be done in 2 weeks. I came back the next year and committed to finishing it, and it still took months. Then I did CS50P, and with Python being so close to English, it was easy to pick up.
